When DCA-based Captain Vincent Schmitt stepped onto Flight 4523 from Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA) to Madison, Wisconsin (MSN), it was more than another day at work. It was the culmination of weeks of planning, coordination and care from fellow Republic Associates who rallied together to help create a once-in-a-lifetime moment for the man who helped shape Captain Schmitt’s life.
Captain Schmitt, who joined Republic Airways in September 2023, recently had the opportunity to operate a flight carrying his 95-year-old grandfather, a Korean War veteran, to Madison. The trip marked his grandfather’s return to a place filled with memories, where he earned his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1959 and where he met the woman with whom he would build his life and legacy.
What made this occasion even more meaningful was the journey that led to it. For years, Captain Schmitt’s grandfather had chosen not to travel. As his wife’s health declined, the two were unable to take trips together. He would express that he didn’t want to make new memories without the woman with whom he had shared more than six decades of life. Together, Captain Schmitt’s grandparents built a life centered on family, sharing more than 66 years of marriage before her passing earlier this year.
This trip, however, was different. Family members were gathering in Madison for a reunion, creating an opportunity not only to bring everyone together but also to honor the memory of the woman who had meant so much to them all in the city where their story began.
Behind the scenes, a group of Republic Airways Associates worked together to make the experience unforgettable. DCA’s Base Chief Pilot Melvin Paniagua supported Captain Schmitt’s request to operate the flight and worked internally to coordinate the special assignment. Making the plan a reality required additional teamwork. Captain Jimmy Deneef, one of Captain Schmitt’s initial and upgrade Instructors, was originally assigned to operate Flight 4523. Once this was brought to his attention, Captain Deneef immediately volunteered to deadhead on the flight and rejoin the crew in Madison so Captain Schmitt could operate the flight and create a lasting memory with his grandfather.
The effort didn’t stop there. To preserve the surprise, Chief Pilot Paniagua and Captain Deneef orchestrated a “blockade” to ensure Captain Schmitt’s grandfather would not see him board the aircraft prior to departure. Their careful planning, combined with support from the flight crew, the System Operations Control team and Captain Schmitt’s family, helped create a moment that nobody would ever forget.
Once onboard, Captain Schmitt addressed customers during his welcome announcement.
“Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome aboard Flight 4523. We have a very special flight this morning,” he began. He shared that his grandfather, a Korean War veteran, was traveling with them to Madison for a family reunion where his children, grandchildren and extended family would be waiting for him.
Then Captain Schmitt explained what his grandfather has meant to him personally. “My grandfather helped me become the man I am today, and I wouldn’t be standing in front of you all if it wasn’t for my grandfather.” The cabin responded warmly as he reflected on his grandfather’s sense of humor.
“But if you ask him, though, he isn’t 95, he’ll always be 19,” Captain Schmitt shared, drawing laughter throughout the aircraft. “So, he’s 19. We can’t serve him any liquor on this flight, so make sure to keep everyone honest.”
He closed the announcement with a tribute to the countless sports conversations they have shared over the years. “As he always told me during all those sports conversations we’ve had over the years, ‘On, Wisconsin!'”
Then came the simple message that captured the meaning of the day: “Love you.”
While the announcement lasted only a few minutes, the moment represented generations of love, sacrifice and support. It was a tribute to a Korean War veteran, a husband who never stopped loving his wife, a grandfather whose influence helped shape the life of a Republic Airways Captain and a family reconnecting in the place where so many of their memories began.
For Captain Schmitt and his grandfather, Flight 4523 wasn’t simply a flight to Madison. It was a journey home.
Just as importantly, it was a reminder of what makes Republic Airways special. From Base Chief Pilot Melvin Paniagua and Captain Jimmy Deneef to the flight crew, the SOC team and every Associate who supported the operation behind the scenes, countless individuals worked together to make this homecoming possible.
