8th Annual Republic Airways Pulling for Wishes Plane Pull
One of our biggest events is the annual Pulling for Wishes Plane Pull. Thanks to our sponsors and the commitment of our tireless Associates, our 2017 charitable event raised a record of more than $500,000 from the Plane Pull during the day and the dinner Gala that night to benefit these three groups.
Equally impressive: Since the Plane Pull started in 2011, Republic has raised more than $2 million to help benefit the nonprofit Indiana Children’s Wish Fund (ICWF), which has granted thousands of wishes such as vacations and celebrity visits to children suffering life-threatening or terminal illnesses. Last year, we added its commitment to kids by adding new beneficiaries of Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent (PMCH) and Riley Children’s Foundation (RCF), both premiere Indianapolis-based organizations renowned for their child initiatives.
“It truly was our best event yet. We are so lucky and thankful to have such generous sponsors and supporters. Of course, we couldn’t have pulled it off without our passionate and committed Associates – pun intended.”
-Amy Chiappe, Director of Corporate and Community Responsibility
It was a year of other firsts, too: a record number of financial sponsors; the largest Kroger Kids Activity Zone ever, featuring free interactive games, a Tiny House and the Oscar Meyer Weiner Mobile, among other attractions; mascots including Boomer from the Indiana Pacers; aircraft displays; more than 100 silent and live auction items; and a sold-out Gala dinner and live auction.
The 2017 top finishers, pull times and prizes:
- First place: Fitness Garage Pulling for Mason (a team honoring Wish child Mason Unton of Westfield, Ind.), 7.34 seconds, 20,000 miles on Southwest Airlines.
- Second place: APEX, 7.80 seconds, 10 $100 gift cards to Prime 47 Carmel restaurant (host of the evening Gala)
- Third place: Carmel Fire Department, 7.81 seconds, 10 $20 gift cards to Ambrosia restaurant in Indianapolis. (CFD placed first in 2011 and 2014)
- Best team costume: Heico Aerospace, 10 Embraer aircraft models
The record pull time of 6.59 seconds, set by the LIDS Foundation Inc. in 2015, still stands.
About 1,500 people, including celebrities, dignitaries and hundreds of competitors, turned out for the 2017 event at Republic’s Indianapolis Maintenance Center (IMC), 2745 S. Hoffman Road. That night, the Gala drew a capacity crowd of 450 people and included remarks by Republic CEO and President Bryan Bedford, PMCH and RCF representatives, and Pam Frenzel, whose son enjoyed an ICWF trip to Disneyland before passing away in 2004. The Plane Pull is dedicated to Tyler’s memory.
“It’s impossible to name everyone who helped make the 2017 event such a success; every department across our system played an important role,” Chiappe said. “We look forward to building on this success at our next Plane Pull event.”
The 2018 Pulling for Wishes Plane Pull is set for 9 a.m. this Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Republic’s IMC. If you have questions, please email our Plane Pull team at email@example.com. Join us! Download the registration packet HERE.
